Chromatography - The Science of Separation [Jun 2010]

Measuring the radioactive noble gas Krypton using chromatography

Chromatography is the science of separation, with the analyte of interest being in a mobile phase, passing through a series of stationary phases. This allows the analyte to be isolated for quantification through a wide variety of techniques. This article looks at how chromatography is used to separate the noble gas krypton from air.

Nuclear Waste Clean-Up [Jun 2009]

Treatment technologies to ensure stable long term storage and disposal

Historical perspective

As one of the pioneers of nuclear technology, the UK has accumulated a substantial legacy of radioactive waste from a variety of different nuclear programmes both civil and defence related. Some of this waste has already been disposed of or treated and in storage, but most still forms part of existing facilities and will only become waste over the next several decades as these plants are decommissioned and cleaned up. The waste is radioactive and thus hazardous for long time periods and will require safe retrieval, treatment, packaging, storage and eventual disposal.
